Andy Ruiz Jr. (born September 11, 1989) is an American professional boxer who is a former unified WBA, WBO, IBO, and IBF World Heavyweight champion.

Career[]

Amateur career[]

In his amateur career Ruiz Jr. earned a 105–5 record including two Mexican National Junior Olympics gold medals and the World Ringside Heavyweight Championship. He represented Mexico in two 2008 Beijing Olympic Games qualification tournaments but lost in both.

Professional career[]

Ruiz Jr. made his professional debut on March 28, 2009.

Unified World Heavyweight Champion[]

On May 1, 2019 with one month notice Ruiz Jr. agreed to fight Anthony Joshua on June 1, 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York for the unified WBA, WBO, IBO, and IBF World Heavyweight Championship. Despite being an 11-1 underdog Ruiz Jr. survived a knockdown in the third round and stormed back to knock Joshua down twice in the same third round. Then Ruiz Jr. knocked Joshua down twice more in the seventh round before the referee stopped the fight after deciding Joshua could not continue.

Ruiz became the first fighter of Mexican descent to win a World Heavyweight Championship.
